Contact lenses offer many benefits, including the ability to see without obstruction. Lisa M McDevitt OD provides contact lens exams and other eye care services for patients in and around the Reading area. Here are a few common questions patients often have about contact lenses and how our optometrist can help.

Who Can Wear Contact Lenses?

Contact lenses can be worn to treat refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Children can start wearing contact lenses anywhere between 12 to 24 years of age, depending on their eye health.

What Are the Benefits of Contact Lenses?

Wearing contact lenses is a great way to maintain a natural appearance. Many people do not want to wear glasses because frames and dirty lenses can be a serious obstruction. Additionally, people who play sports may not want to wear sports goggles when participating in these activities. Contact lenses are much more versatile.

What Types of Contact Lenses Are Available?

The right contact lenses for you are based on your health, vision, and lifestyle. For example, some people wear daily lenses, which can be thrown away at the end of the day, but others wear weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly lenses.

Some people need special contact lenses. Hard-to-fit contact lenses are available for those with conditions like presbyopia, keratoconus, and dry eye syndrome. If you have a condition that makes wearing traditional contacts difficult, our eye doctor can help you find a pair that’s right for you.

What Happens During a Contact Lens Exam?

During a contact lens exam, our optometrist will measure your cornea and the diameter of your eye to find the right size contact. Your contact lens prescription is slightly different from your glasses prescription, so the two exams also differ slightly. You will be given a pair of contact lenses to try for a period of time before returning for another appointment to ensure that the lenses are fitting correctly.
